Accelerated Reader (AR) is a program in which students read books outside of class and take online comprehension quizzes based on the reading. Students earn points based on their performance on these quizzes.
Most young adult novels are AR books. AR books are assigned a level based on the complexity of the text. Some libraries include the AR level on the book, but the level can also be found at this website: http://www.arbookfind.com/.
When the student has finished reading the book, he or she can go onto the AR website here: https://hosted37.renlearn.com/2051796/ and take a quiz for that book. The points scored will count towards the yearly goal. Each student has been given a yearly point goal based on his or her reading level. Each student also has a range of book levels that he or she can read. This information can be obtained from each students’ contract sheet that was filled out at the beginning of the year, which Mrs. Shepp has in each student’s file. Please choose books that fall within or close to this range. Students must reach their Yearly Goal by June 7, 2020.
BUILDING VOCABULARY PROGRAM
Building Vocabulary Program
For vocabulary this year, we will be using the Building Vocabulary program, from Teacher Created Materials, in lieu of our former Wordly Wise Program. This new Vocabulary Program teaches students to identify the meaning of a word based on the definition, context clues, synonyms, antonyms, and reading passages. We will also study the origins of Greek and Latin words.
Building Vocabulary from Word Roots provides a systematic approach to teaching vocabulary using Greek and Latin prefixes, bases, and suffixes. Over 90% of English words of two or more syllables are of Greek or Latin origin. Instead of learning words and definitions in isolation, students learn key roots and strategies for deciphering words and their meanings across all content areas.
The workbook provides multiple ways for students to practice their new vocabulary. We will be taking tests at the end of each lesson.
